CLINTON, S.C. - The Presbyterian College women's lacrosse team picked up its first National Lacrosse Conference win of the season on Sunday with a Senior Day victory over the visiting Howard Bison, 19-16. PC improves to 2-14 on the year and 1-5 in the NLC. Howard falls to 0-11 and 0-5.
Brianne Ward (Cincinnati, Ohio) led all players with six points on two goals and a career-high four assists. Catherine Ellis (Charlotte, N.C.) posted five goals while senior Kirstin Stenoien (Houston, Texas) had a Senior Day to remember, scoring three goals and two assists with a team-high three draw controls. Jaime Beamish (Memphis, Tenn.) collected a game-high four ground balls and tallied four points on three goals and one assist. Lauren Lefeber (Waxhaw, N.C.) also picked up four ground balls and three draw controls, both matching team-highs.
Freshman goalkeeper Samantha Arey (New Albany, Ohio) made seven saves to pick up her first career win. Senior Susan England (Bethesda, Md.) stopped four shots as well. The Blue Hose edged the Bison in ground balls (27 to 21) and shots (38 to 32). Howard's Cynithia Smalls scored six goals and picked up an assist in the effort.
PC took an early 4-2 lead thanks to a three-goal run that featured scores from Ellis, Ward and Beamish. Howard tied up the game at 5-5 with a pair of goals following Beamish's second goal of the game, but PC strung together three goals to take back the lead. Ellis completed the hat trick before Katie Prisco (West Babylon, N.Y.) and Stenoien found the net to lead 8-5 with 9:24 left in the first half.
Beamish answered a Jaymie Cox Howard goal to keep PC's lead at three, but the Bison scored four consecutive goals--including three straight from Cynithia Smalls--to take their second lead of the game. PC recovered by scoring the final three goals of the half to take a 12-10 advantage into halftime. Ellis scored on a feed from Ward before Ward herself cashed in on a Megan Schaaf (Ellicott City, Md.) assist. PC capped the run as Lefeber found Stenoien and the senior tucked a shot past goalkeeper Ashley Foote with one second left on the clock.
Howard scored the first and third goals of the second half, sandwiched around Bonnie Corrigan's (Yorktown, Va.) seventh goal of the season on Ward's fourth assist of the day. With Howard one goal from tying, PC ripped off four straight goals and kept the Bison from finding the net for 10:56 of play. Three of the first four goals came from the free position as Lefeber, Stenoien and Kelsey Rupsch (Libertyville, Ill.) each converted from close range. Rupsch followed her first goal with another 5:11 later, taking a Schaaf pass in and scoring. The tally gave PC a 17-12 lead with 11:41 remaining.
Cheryse Cox snapped the PC run with her first goal of the day before Laura Meade (Acworth, Ga.) became the third senior to score on Senior Day with her ninth goal of the season at 9:54. Smalls scored her sixth of the day for the Bison to cut PC's lead to four before Ellis answered with her 43rd of the campaign. Howard scored twice more but PC's advantage would hold up as the Blue Hose won, 19-16.
PC next heads to Jacksonville for the team's regular season finale on Saturday, April 28. Opening draw is slated for 1 p.m.
